Contemporary public opinion evolves from and through gossip and rumor.
Gossip is idle chatter, usually personality driven. Rumor is more credible gossip and is mostly driven by current events or activities.
From a global, traditional view, rumor mongering is dominantly a male pastime, reserving gossip to the distaff preference.

The line separating gossip and rumor from slander and libel can be drawn very fine, indeed.
The challenging aspect of it all is that truth, accuracy and evidence play no significant part in the origin or propagation of content.
